Just so that we can sign from the same hymn sheet (so’s to speak) … here is my cunning plan again with comments below each bulleted item – original text in italics…

I have made a list of the following features that I would expect any reasonable 3D modeling software package to have, I will create a mini project … still toying with ideas as to exactly what … and see how it fares. I didn’t want to be too regimented – that would remind me of work … boring … so to the list

• Any computer animation software should provide easy animation a bit subjective but includes general ease of use – access to features – touch ‘n’ feel – that sort of thing.

I found the operation of the sofware really intuitive … great stuff

• It should provide a really good 3D modeling studio – with access to a large number of 3D object types – polygons etc. It should also provide good texture facilities, good distortion options. Generally give the 3D element a good testing out.

This is amazing – I’ve got so much more to learn here  … great stuff

• It should be able to create cartoons … for my grand kids to be

• It should support real time 3D and game creation – a long way from the spectrum days …

Yes it can – I really did not have time to dig into this – but there are tutorials etc to be digging into.

• It should support easy 3D landscaping and object creation – all generated scenes, objects should be rendered excellently.

Yes

• Perform interactive 3D rigging – i.e. skeletal movements

Yes

• Make it a breeze to be able to do shading etc

Yes

• Really good training & examples – I’m getting a bit slower as I age, it’s ok if it’s familiar[ish] but completely new things stump me for a while … annoy’s me …

I would also expect a decent support & upgrade path – I really hate being charged almost the the full price of the sofware to move from one release to another …

Another thing I look for certainly if I by any product on line is a decent Guarantee, yes I know a lot of ‘suppliers’ for want of a better term would try and wriggle out of guarantees, in the same way that insurance companies would try to wriggle out of paying claims if they have half the chance … but I can make ‘em wriggle if I have to.

All of the above points satisfied and more …

Hi,

The issue that I was concerned about and that potentially was clouding my view of the best 3D software I have used is indeed fading away.

I contacted the distributors and they replied quickly and efficiently reassuring me that all is well and my fears were ungrounded.

I am going to resume playing testing the software this week, I have been distracted sorting out my mum’s computer in Spain (remotely).

All,

Some of you might or not be wondering … why hasn’t Gerry revealed the the name of the “best 3D software” that he testing out.

Well the reason is that it might either be a) not able to live up too expectations or b) even worse (some sort of scam) … I really do not want to be associated with either cr*p products … or possibly illegitemate products.

Some clouds have appeared on the horizon of what was quite a sunny time … playing with the software.

In my typical style I am now investigating these clouds for clarity and indeed too see if they are real or not (could just be a mark on my glasses …

I will report back when I have some better and substantiated information.

I have been playing (sorry testing ) the 3D software package for a little while now, I actually started to test before I decided to create this blog … in fact that was the reason I started to create this blog … to share my enthusiasm.

Anyway enough said on why this blog. What I did find was that I was doing the the evaluation a bit haphazardly and jumping from one fun 3D feature perhaps to a learning video, to another 3D modeling feature – then perhaps to see how it was all coming together and rendering the animation and seeing how it played back. While this was great fun I realized that unless I structured the testing a bit more carefully I could end up with vast areas of the package untouched.

So to the ‘cunning plan’ …

This is really quite exciting – if you have read my about me page (if you have’nt pop over there asap) you will know that I consider myself very fortunate to be playing with, evaluating if you will, what at first glance seems to me the best 3D software Animation package around.

I have tried several (including free) animation packages and have found them wanting.

My first impressions … I am really liking a lot of things about this new system for intance:

1. Costs a lot less than ‘Maya’
2. Is easy to use – and has great training included (manual + video’s)
3. And lots more …

but before I commit myself & endorse it out-right I want to take a few days (maybe a week or two) to trial out this software & test its good points  & bad points (every software has these) and …

I will report back in this blog…
